Sustainability Day 15 – let’s make music!

February 21, 2017 By Kirsty Fantini Leave a Comment

This is an area where I often hear educators comment on their lack of resources including instruments. We can also make the mistake of assuming that music or music experiences are about putting on a children’s action song CD….

Music is so much more than this! Not only should we be exploring difference genres and cultural sounds but we should also be exploring making music and creating music.

Here are some easy ways to engage in sustainability such as recycling as well as economic sustainability by re-using household items and creating, designing and “making music” with children!

Various household and recyclable items attached to a timber frame (could use a timber crate or fence)

Think chimes…. a great way to explore sound (and wind) with children… an old pot lid with kitchen items!

This music spool table just has various sized tins hanging to bang and explore sounds

Another wind chime using forks and spoons!

A larger music wall with various types of metal / tin utensils which will provide varied sounds

I love this-  a great idea for an old colander!

Keep those tuna tins! This is an effective wind chime using painted tins!

There are so many ways we can explore music with children and one of my favourite is through recycled resources… the sounds vary, children can explore and create and we can also talk sustainability!

Look out for Day 16!!
