OK, so before you shriek “nooooo, not mud”…. think back to your own childhood and making mud pies! As a child I was always outside in the dirt and mud… I can remember trickling the water from the hose in the dirt to create the perfect texture… running enough to pour into Mum’s old muffin tins… but thick enough to dry hard by the end of the day! Of course my mud muffins would be decorated with flowers, sand, small pebbles, stick, leaves and what ever else I found in the garden!
What an amazing experience for a young child… creativity, autonomy, focus and intent, trial and error, risk taking and problem-solving and of course pretend play as I opened my “cafe”!
While mud is a wonderful tool to support such play skills it is also a fantastic sensory experience for young children.
Mud can be explored in many ways… here are some ideas;
A sign “setting the scene” for children, educators and families…
Dirt + water = MUD! Just add buckets!!
Focused intentional work making mud bricks… a great opportunity for children to explore cause and effect as they observe the creation of mud, the moulding and then the drying of mud bricks.
Amazing mud kitchens supporting wonderful mud muffin making!!
Cooking collaborations and exploring many consistencies of mud!
Mus is a wonderful way for children to connect with the land… to feel dirt and water in their hands, to be focused, creative and curious about this wonderful medium!
Look out for day 11!
