Sustainability Day 6 – Pollinators!

February 10, 2017 By Kirsty Fantini Leave a Comment

Following on from yesterday’s “Loving Nature”…  part of this is also awareness and appreciation of what nature does… more specifically what “pollinators” do!

Do you know what role bees and butterflies play?  Did you know certain species of bee are on endangered list? Did you know that 1 in every 3 bites of food relies on honey bee pollination?

Without bees and butterflies our world and our diet would be very different!

Rather than be afraid of bees, step on them, shoo them away… let’s wonder what role they play in nature… let’s build awareness, curiosity and in turn greater appreciation of our environment.

So what can you do in your centre?

Using recycled materials create a “Bee Hotel”.  Bees can fly up to 10klm / day and need to rest every 2 hours.. this Bee Hotel can be a safe place for bees to rest or for our native solitary bees!

During these warm days bees need to drink water and often drown. So make a bee friendly water station where you have a shallow bowl with stones (for the bees to stand on)

Plant a bee & butterfly friendly garden… they love blue, purple, yellow and white flowers

Get curious about bees. Take a look at this clip with the children and be amazed at what flowers look like to bees & butterflies!

Talk about bees and their importance!

Share these great bee facts with children and families!

Admire the hard work bees do as they create honey. Purchase raw honey from a local bee keeper and taste this. Below is a circular hive created by Australian Native sting-less bee (below)

Learn about Australian Native bees such as this sting-less bees with pollen sacks on its leg. We also have other amazing native bees such as “Blue Banded” and “teddy Bear” bees- worth a google!!!

Purchase a Bee hive for your centre. This is my daughter with our hive of Australian native sting-less bees. Children can watch them leave and return to their hive, forage in the garden, pollinate the flowers and vegetables and the great part is….there are no stings!

If you would like more child friendly information on bees feel free to join my daughters Facebook Group “Save the Bees”  https://www.facebook.com/groups/miasavethebees/

Look out for Day 7!!!
