We are so lucky to live in a country where we have so many beautiful birds that frequent our gardens and children are naturally curious about the animals and creatures they observe.. so why not encourage this further!
There are many fantastic, easy to make, sustainable bird feeders we can make with the children. What a great way to talk about our wildlife, the environment, nurturing appreciation as well as increasing their awareness of local bird life. These attitudes that we role model and instill in children is the starting point for life long sustainable practices and this can begin with “feeding the birds”!
Here are some of my favourites;
(above) Use of a recycled plastic bottle and 2 wooden spoons pushed through holes provides a nice perch for a bird to feed.
An orange peel on string provides a great sustainable bird feeder
Have any old tea cups? Superglue these to their saucers and suspend in a tree…
While these are Christmas themed.. we get the idea… using seeds and honey into a shape cutter and then onto string
I love this idea (but without the peanut butter… I use honey)… paint the roll with honey, roll it though seeds and grains, string it up!
Great use for old muffin tray…drill holes in each corner, fill with various fruits, seeds, grains and hand near the trees.
This could be a great preschool room experience project.. using paddle pop sticks to create their own feeder.
So whether you use items that are ready to be thrown out, fruit skins or recycled materials they all promote discussion about bird life, the environment, our local community as well as inviting the birds in for appreciation.
