Children who understand the basics of sustainability, who engage in sustainable practices daily and who observe others role modelling will understand just how important it is!
Over the last 23 days I have explored various ways we can incorporate sustainable practices and attitudes into our every day and as you can see they can be simple yet effective!
So why should we do this?
Being sustainable promotes awareness: when we are in-tune to being sustainable we are more conscious of our actions, we are mindful and present… and in today’s society I think that is a great thing!!
It’s Character Building: we all want children to be thoughtful, respectful and empathetic… what better way than to build these life skills and attributes through caring for something other than ourselves
It’s a great habit: if we start this young then it will become a very normal part of a person’s life and attitude!
The Domino Effect: we know children learn through imitation and from their peers…. so the more children learn about and embrace sustainable practices the more they will share this with their friends…
Knowledge brings Action! When children understand the reasons behind our actions and their actions… they have knowledge… then this will lead to greater involvement and action to make a difference. Anyone can make a difference.. no matter how large or small… every bit counts!
Have Purpose: we all want and need a purpose… being sustainable and being aware of your environment, making good choices, caring for the Earth and it’s flora and fauna is a great way to have a sense of purpose and be connected with the land.
We should never underestimate the significance of relationships between humans and the Earth, whether it be as simple as appreciating natural elements, a walk through the forest or promoting recycling within your service… to supporting animal conservation.
